The Ottawa River, aside from some dangerous rapids, was the most direct route from the Ports of Montreal and Quebec City to the interior of Canada at the time Canada was being explored and settled. This river highway assured Ottawa a strategic importance. Subsequently, the Bytown and later Ottawa became the Capital of Canada.
