The Ottawa River, aside from some dangerous rapids, was the most direct route from the Ports of Montreal and Quebec City to the interior of Canada at the time Canada was being explored and settled. This river highway assured Ottawa a strategic importance. Subsequently, the Bytown and later Ottawa became the Capital of Canada. Ottawa was and is connected to the south by the Rideau Canal to the historically important town of Kingston and it borders on Quebec to the north. Immediatly to the north in Quebec is the city of Hull and the picturesque Gatineau Hills. These areas in two distinct provinces are included together because they are logically part of the Ottawa tourism area and their combined year round tourism attractions - Parliament Hiil and the Changing of the Guard, Museums, Festivals, Skating on the Rideau Canal, Sking and Hiking in the Gatineaus, Resturants, Botanical Gardens and much more.
